Riverside Park: 1890-1895
The park was initially a popular places for steamboat landings from various cities. To aid the travel of the steamboats, in 1895 the Corps of Engineers became involved in developing the park-particularly the channel. The Corps of Engineers are a group of civilian and military personnel who work to improve and create engineering projects around the world. The Corps contributed by adjusting the park's shoreline and digging a deeper channel to allow the larger steamboats to pass through. A part of the point was also rounded off in 1895, which resulted in the cutting down of the old council tree.
Another development was the addition of a well allowing for safe drinking water which was not available before in 1890.
